ARLINGTON, Texas - Seattle U men's soccer was well represented in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) postseason awards, highlighted by Demian Alvarez being named Defensive Player of the Year and Edgar Leon as the Freshman of the Year. Joining them were six more Redhawks being named to either the first, second, or freshman teams.
Alvarez, who was named Second Team All-WAC last season, was given the top defensive honor in the conference after leading the Seattle U back line. He appeared in all but one game this season, starting in each one at center back. Alvarez helped the Redhawks secure three shutouts on the season. He was also named First Team All-WAC.
Joining Alvarez as First Team selections were Taketo Onodera and Titus Washington. The team's two leaders in goals and points, they were the engine behind a lethal Redhawk attack. Washington tallied eight goals and six assists in his first year with the program after transferring in from Sacramento State. Onodera wrapped up a three-year Seattle U career be scoring six and dishing out another three. Seattle U had two more named to the Second Team, with Richy Lapointe-Guevara and Mo Mohamed being selected.
Leon, a freshman out of East Wenatchee, Wash., proved to be an instant impact player on the pitch this season as he was named the conference's Freshman of the Year. He appeared in all 17 matches this season and made 12 starts while scoring four goals and dishing out one assist. His nine points on the season are tied for 4th on a high powered Redhawk offensive attack. As would the case for the top freshman, he was also named to the All-Freshman team alongside Andre Philibbosian.
The Redhawks will be back in action next Wednesday, Nov. 13, when they play the winner of Utah Tech and California Baptist in the WAC semifinals. Kickoff from Phoenix will be at 6pm PT.
