SEATTLE - The Seattle U volleyball team stood nearly even against WAC frontrunner UT Arlington in the opening sets, but a late surge by the Mavericks shifted the tide and the Redhawks fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-13) at the Redhawk Center on Thursday night.
Junior Merima Smajlovic led both teams in kills, tallying the lone double-digit effort of the evening with 10. She also picked up seven digs. Just behind was senior Arianna Bilby who went for nine kills, two aces, two blocks and five digs on the night. The pair combined for 19 of Seattle U's 30 kills.
Redshirt sophomore Elif Teksoy recorded three aces, matching her second highest total of the season for the third time. She was one of two Redhawks with double digit assists, tallying 17 to her ever growing career total. Freshman Grace Jones added another 10 assists to the Redhawks' 30 on the night.
Senior Katlyn Sipes inched every closer to 1,000 career digs after her 12th double digit dig effort brought in 13 more digs to pace both teams. She currently sits at 988 digs in her four years at Seattle U.
Neither team got off to an exceptional start. UT Arlington hit an even .000 with nine kills and nine errors to Seattle U's eight kills and 10 errors. The Redhawks outhit the Mavericks .286 in the second set, notching 14 kills on 35 attacks for four errors. UTA hit .242 to rack up 13 kills on 33 attempts and five errors.
UTA led by as many as eight in the opening set, but Seattle U chipped at the lead behind a 7-1 run late in the first set. Teksoy's first ace of the night tied it 22-22 before the Mavericks ended on a 3-1 run.
The Redhawks struck first in set two behind a kill from sophomore Tatum Chase. She had three kills and led the Redhawks with three blocks. A kill from Bilby tied the set early 4-4 which sparked an eventual 6-0 run by Seattle U. The Mavericks returned the favor with their own 5-1 run to reclaim the lead 11-10. The pulling back and forth saw both teams with 4-0 scoring runs late in the set. UTA's set them up 23-21 as both teams traded points to end the set 25-23 in favor of the Mavericks.
UTA shook off the first two sets, hitting at a .452 clip in the final set. The Redhawks couldn't keep pace and the Mavericks took the third set 25-13.
Seattle U tallied 30 kills, five aces, five blocks, 30 assists and 37 digs to UTA's 38 kills, seven aces, eight blocks, 34 assists and 35 digs. Both teams suffered from errors, the Mavericks racking up 16 to Seattle U's 19.
The Redhawks hit the road, traveling to California Baptist for their first meeting of the season. The two clash on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at Van Dyne Gym.
