BERKELEY, Calif. - An historic run for the Seattle University Redhawks came to a close as Lamija Avdic was eliminated in the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regionals. Avdic became the first Redhawk ever to reach the round of 16, winning each of her first two matches in Berkeley.
"It was a solid weekend of tennis for our team and especially for Lamija," said head coach Kristina Hollander. "Her run to the round of 16 shows that our players can compete against anyone. We are really looking forward to the remaining fall tournaments to continue improving our team's tennis level."
Two Redhawks, had reached the round of 32 at ITA Northwest Regionals, Elena Kraleva in 2022 and Jade Lancaster in 2019. Avdic bested that mark by reaching the round of 16 before falling to Washington's Alexia Jacobs. Avdic first defeated Olivia Symons of Oregon 6-4, 6-0 in the round of 64 and Makenna Thiel of Cal 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the round of 32.
Through two events this year, the Husky Invitational and ITA Northwest Regionals, Avdic is 4-1 in singles play.
Avdic also advanced to the round of 32 in doubles play, pairing with Daria Nazarenko to defeat UC Davis' Daisy Maunupau and Mika Ikemori 8-3 before falling to Cal's Tiziana Marie Schomburg and Naomi Xu 4-8.
The Redhawks will have three more tournaments this fall season. First, Seattle University will compete in the WAC Fall Invitational and Gonzaga Invitational concurrently. The WAC Fall Invitational will take place October 24-27 in Abilene, Texas. The Gonzaga Invitational will be in Spokane and takes place October 25-27. The fall season will finish up with the three-day Duck Invitational, hosted by Oregon November 1-3.
