POCATELLO, Idaho – Seattle University volleyball closed out its season-opening weekend of play with an 18-25, 16-25, 14-25 defeat to San Diego State on the final day of the Idaho State Tournament Sunday.
The Redhawks wrapped up the weekend with a 1-2 record and All-Tournament honors for Merima Smajlovic. The junior outside hitter averaged 2.92 kills and 3.0 digs per set while also tallying seven aces and five blocks.
On Sunday morning, Seattle U could find no answer for the Aztec's size. SDSU finished with a 12-2 block advantage and hit .366 for the match.
Smajlovic paced the Redhawks with 11 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double in three matches. Arianna Bilby added six kills and five digs.
The Redhawks briefly return to Seattle before heading back out on the road for the Roadrunner Classic on Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6. Opponents for the week will include Nevada and tournament host CSU Bakersfield.
