SEATTLE - Seattle U women's soccer battled to a draw with crosstown rivals Washington, 1-1, Thursday night in Seattle. Caroline Penner had the go-ahead goal in the first half, but the Huskies responded in the second to send the WAC/101 Cup to its second straight draw.
"I thought today was a pretty incredible battle between two solid teams," said head coach Julie Woodward. "I was proud of the way my team competed today."
The Redhawk goal came from a set piece taken by Jourdyn Curran near midfield in the 37'. She sent a perfectly lofted ball into the box that met the leaping head of Penner who knocked the ball into the net. It was Penner's first goal of the season and the second assist of 2024 for Curran.
Seattle U would take the lead into the half but weren't able to hold onto it in the second after Washington equalized in the 72'. SU would quickly get the opportunity to regain the lead in a minute later when they were awarded a penalty off a Husky handball, yet the conversion attempt went left of frame.
Washington nearly was able to snag the victory with a late chance that appeared to be going into goal, but Kait Raffensperger made a back heel save that proved to be the biggest of the night.
"We had a very special performance from Penner and U'i (Kaaihue)," Woodward added of the night's standouts. "Kait was unbelievable and continues to show why she is one of the best center backs in the country and just a great leader of our team."
MATCH TIMELINE:
The tie moves the Redhawks to 1-1-1 through three games played in 2024. They will have extra rest as this was the lone game on the week for them, as they return to action next Thursday at UNLV in Las Vegas.
