SEATTLE - Seattle U baseball took down their inner-city rivals Washington, 7-6, Tuesday night in Seattle. Sam Kane's 2-run home run in the top of the 8th proved to be the difference as the Redhawks evened their season series with Washington.
"Big win for us tonight - not just because it was UW, but because we desperately needed to feel that feeling again," said head coach Donny Harrel.
Grant Heiser would drive in the first two runs of the game, reaching on a fielder's choice in the 1st to score Cole Kleckner and hitting an RBI single that plated Kane in the 3rd. Jackson Reed would also pick up an RBI in the 3rd, a part of his 3-for-4 effort on the night. The Redhawks would have the 3-2 lead after three innings played.
Washington would put up three runs in their half of the 3rd as SU trailed for the first time on the night. The Redhawks would respond by scoring 4-runs over the next three innings to reclaim the lead, including Kane's team leading 7th long ball of the season in the 8th.
Cameron Dayton (2-2) would be called on, twice, to help secure the victory on Montlake. Dayton started the day at first base, before taking over on the mound in the 5th inning. After giving up no runs in two innings, he would switch back to first in the bottom of the 8th. Ryan Morrison would pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, before Dayton would return to the mound in the 9th to get the final three outs and pick up the Redhawk win.
"Dayton is an absolute stud and when I asked him if he could come back in if Morrison's spot came up in the lineup - he responded "why not - let's make SU history tonight" and he did just that," said Harrel of Dayton's performance.
The win helped improve Seattle U to 8-24 on the season, and it was their first win over their crosstown rivals since 2022. Seattle U will be back in action when they host a 3-game conference series with Sacramento State starting Friday, April 12, at Bannerwood Park.
