DAVIS, CA - Seattle U baseball split their opening day games with UC Davis, winning 7-6 in the opener and falling 4-13 in game two, Friday in California. Cole Kleckner stood out in the openers by recording seven hits in the first two games of the new season.

"We did some good things today but need to clean-up our ability to take care of the ball in bunt situations," said head coach Donny Harrel. "They took advantage of our mistakes and then broke the game open."

GAME 1

Kleckner and Derek Gellos combined to bring in the first three runs of the 2024 season, as Gellos picked up three RBI to pace the Redhawks in the season opening win. SU trailed after a 4-run inning from the Aggies in the 4th but scored five runs over the next four frames to go back out in front.

Kleckner reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with 3-runs scored, an RBI, and one walk.

Cameron Dayton, who came on in relief in the 6th, was credited with the win after going 2 1/3 while only giving up one run and striking out two. Transfer Jarek Woodward picked up his first save in a Redhawk uniform by getting the final five outs of the ballgame to secure the victory.

Freshman Sam Kane and Brandon Stinnett also picked up their first collegiate hits in the win, as both also tallied runs scored in the game.

GAME 2

The Redhawk offense continued rolling into game two of the series, scoring the first four runs over the opening three innings. Grant Heiser secured his first RBI of the new year by scoring Kleckner in the 1st. That was followed by Kane, who added to his standout debut by driving in Trevor Antonson to close out the inning.

Antonson would pay it forward by plating Jake Wagoner in the second. The final run of the day for SU would come off the bat of Ryne Hays in the 3rd, as the Aggies would score 13 unanswered runs to even the series.

Matt Rowatt was credited with the loss, going 1/3 and giving up three runs on three hits. Peter Chronowski, who got the start in game two, went 5 and allowed three earned runs on seven hits.

"Heck of a day for Kleckner with 7 hits in 2 games," Harrel added. "Dayton and Woodward did a great job securing the win in the opener. Very proud as well on how good our freshmen played in their first D1 games. We make some adjustments tomorrow and hope to take a road series on Sunday"

The Redhawks and Aggies will have an off day on Saturday before wrapping up the 3-game series on Sunday. First pitch from Davis is scheduled for 10am PT, as sophomore Luke Alwood is set to take the hill for the Redhawks. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
