SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball (3-20, 3-11 WAC) marked its second consecutive win on Thursday evening, taking down Southern Utah, 75-71, with four Redhawks finishing in double figures. Both Julianna Walker and Makayla Moore finished with a team-high 19 points and knocked down a combined six free throws in the final minutes to secure the victory. This Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest took place at the Redhawk Center on the campus of Seattle U in Seattle.
Mya Moore provided a strong paint presence on the evening, scoring 13 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Peyton Howard finished in double figures for the fourth straight game, chipping in 11 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter, with the Redhawks taking a four point lead after one thanks to one of Julianna Walker's three three pointer.
The Redhawks used a 12-2 run in the second quarter to help build the lead to as large as seven before the half, led by 13 combined points from Howard and Walker.
The third period saw the Redhawks outscore the Thunderbirds by five and hold them to only 13 points total
When it looked like the Thunderbirds might start get in front, crucial layups by Makayla Moore and Mya Moore helped to keep SU ahead.
COACH YOUNG'S THOUGHTS
"Every game matters to us down the stretch," said Head Coach Skyler Young. "We are treating all this contests like tournament games and we did a great job of pulling out this win. We knew this game would come down to rebounding and keeping the Thunderbirds out of the paint. We did a great job of keeping them to just one shot and holding them off the glass. I am grateful that this team keeps fighting and showing that they want to win and get to Vegas. We are hitting our stride as a team right now and learning how to close out these close games. We control our own destiny and look forward to Saturday."
