Volleyball Places Four on Academic All-District

DENVER, Colo. - Arianna Bilby, Erin Goya, Marley Hardgrave and Katlyn Sipes of Seattle University volleyball have been named on the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

DENVER, Colo. - Arianna Bilby, Erin Goya, Marley Hardgrave and Katlyn Sipes of Seattle University volleyball have been named on the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

Bilby was a key member of the Redhawks squad once again this season, starting in all 27 matches and competing in all 97 sets. The outside hitter set new career-highs in kills (345), kills per set (3.56), digs (252) and total blocks (40.0). The junior from Arlington, Washington, finished the season ranked 109th in the nation and third in the WAC in kills per set as well as 125th in the nation and fourth in the WAC in points per set (4.00). This marks the second career academic award for the Kinesiology major. 

Goya puts her name on the Academic All-District Team for the second straight year, competing in all 27 matches. The defensive specalist/libero set new career-highs in service aces (19) and points (20.0) as well as posting seven double digit dig performances. This marks the fourth career academic award for the Nursing major from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Hardgrave marked a strong sophomore campaign in 2023, starting in all 27 matches. The Bend, Oregon, native set new career-highs in sets played (95), kills (134), kills per set (1.41), aces (seven), total blocks (78.0) and points (186.0). The middle blocker's seven blocks against Abilene Christian (Oct. 28) was vital in the Redhawks setting the program's new single match total blocks record. This marks the second career academic award for the Kinesiology major. 

Sipes was once again a key member of the Redhawks backline, competing in 25 matches. The junior from Montgomery, Illinois, led the Redhawks in digs (294) and digs per set (3.30), setting new career-highs in both categories. Sipes recorded the most double-digit dig performances of anyone on SU, ending the season with 19 in total. This marks the third career academic award for the Psychology major. 

The 2023 Academic All-District® Volleyball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Jan. 9, 2024. Seattle U was one of 10 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schools to have a student-athlete named to the list.
