PREVIEW: WBB Hosts Portland, at Washington

SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball marks its home opener this week, facing off with Portland on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the Redhawk Center. The Redhawks will head back out on the road to conclude the second week of action, making the trip across Montlake for a battle with the Huskies at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Tuesday night's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+, while Saturday's matchup with Washington will be streamed live for free on the Washington Live Stream through the Pac-12. Live stats will be available for both contests.

Tuesday's home opener will also feature a giveaway with Seattle U students receiving rally towels while supplies last.

NATIONAL/CONFERENCE RANKINGS
Seattle U currently leads the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in rebounds per game (41.5) and free throw percentage as well as ranking second in three point defense percentage (22.2%), rebound margin and third in steals per game (15) and turnovers forced per game (21). The Redhawks 15 steals per contest also ranks as the 21st best in the entire country. 

Irena Korolenko is one of 28 players in the country to record a double-double this season as well leading the WAC in rebounds (22) and rebounds per game (11.0). Mya Moore ranks second in the WAC in blocks (four) and blocks per game (2.0) and rebounds per game (8.5), while Peyton Howard ranks sixth in the WAC in steals per game (2.5).

NEW LOOK ON THE BENCH
The 2023-24 Redhawks will feature a complete new look behind the bench, lead by the sixth women's basketball coach in program history, Skyler Young. Young's first staff at the helm of the Redhawks features Michael BrooksRachel SwartzGeAnna Luaulu-Summers and Makala Roper.

Brooks previously coached in collegiate athletics at Bradley University, serving as head coach from 2012-16 with one season as an assistant coach (2011-12), while Swartz returned to the Pacific Northwest after spending last season at Saint Mary's and Luaulu-Summers makes the move to Seattle from University of Oregon where she served as the Ducks' director of creativity and student athlete support. Coach Young retains one familiar face in Roper as she will mark her fourth season as a member of Seattle U. 

HOW TO FOLLOW
All 14 Seattle U home contests this season will be broadcast on ESPN+. For road games, related links to video stream and live stats will be posted on the women's basketball schedule page on goseattleu.com. Fans are encouraged to check the Seattle U Women's Basketball team's official Twitter feed @seattleu_wbb for updates of games in progress as well as news and notes. Russell Brown and former Seattle U Redhawk, Olivia Crawford, mark their second season on the call. 

SCOUTING Portland/Washington
The Pilots finished with a 23-9 overall record and 15-3 mark in the West Coast Conference (WCC) last season, claiming the WCC Tournament Championship with a four point win over Gonzaga. Led by Emme Shearer (12 PPG), Maisie Burnham (11.5 PPG) and Lucy Cochrane (7.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 5 BPG), Portland was picked to finish second in the WCC preseason coaches poll.

The Pilots are led by fifth-year Head Coach Michael Meek. Seattle U trails the all-time series against Portland, 7-8, with the last contest between the two coming back in December of 2020. 

Washington finished with a 19-15 overall record and 7-11 record in Pac-12 conference play last season, making an appearance in the WNIT Fab Four. Washington was picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll. 

The Huskies have four scorers averaging double figures in Elle Ladine (18.5 PPG), Ari Long (14 PPG), Sayvia Sellers (12 PPG and 5 APG) and Dalayah Daniels (10.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG), while they are led by third-year Head Coach Tina Langley. Seattle U trails the all-time series against Washington, 3-22, dropping a narrow contest last season.
