RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Seattle U women's soccer kept their season alive, taking down Southern Utah, 2-1, in the opening round of the 2023 WAC tournament. Caroline Penner and Hallie Bergford both score as the Redhawks punched their ticket to the semifinals.
Penner kept her hot streak going, scoring the opener of the match at the 36' mark. It was the fifth goal in three games and eighth overall for the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week. Seattle U would take that 1-0 advantage into the break.
Southern Utah would equalize just a few minutes into the second half, and the score line would stay 1-1 for the next half hour.
The Redhawks would earn a corner in the 83rd minute, with Jourdyn Curran stepping to the flag. Curran would send an outswinger into the box that met the leaping head of Bergford who would slot the ball home for the game-winner. It was the second goal of the season and proved to be the difference on the night.
