SPOKANE, WA-- Seattle U women's tennis wrapped up their tournament schedule over the weekend in Spokane, WA at the Gonzaga Invite with some impressive performances, including a finals win from freshman Lamija Avdic.
Avdic competed in the red draw and began with a default win against Portland State's Makoto Ohara in the round of 16, she then moved on to the quarterfinals where she defeated Montana State's Jazmin Lerman with scores of 6:2 and 6:4. In the semifinals, Avdic dominated against Idaho's Rachelle Starreveld, defeating her with scores of 6:0 and 6:0. Avdic continued her dominant performance in the final round against Washington State's Hania Abouelsaad with scores of 6:3 and 6:0, earning her first finals win since joining the Redhawks this season.
"The tournament this past weekend highlighted the improvements our players have made." says head coach Kristina Hollander, "The competition was tough but it was a great challenge for our women's team. Lamija winning the Red Singles draw is a wonderful achievement and it gets me excited for our upcoming season." she continues.
Lola Tavcar also competed in the red draw, falling to Portland State's Angel Bean with scores of 2:6 and 0:6. Tavcar then competed in the consolation quarterfinals qualifiers, where she won a close match against Portland's Kylie Canubida with scores of 6:1, 4:6, and a tie-breaking score of 10:4. Tavcar moved on to the consolation semi-finals where she fell to Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken with scores of 3:6 and 2:6.
In the blue draw, Yuna Kadowaki defeated Portland's Nadine Arbaizar Martinez with scores of 6:4 and 6:4. Kadowaki was then defeated by Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen in the quarterfinals with scores of 2:6 and 4:6. Liliya Dimova also competed in the blue draw, falling to Eastern Washington's Isabella Foshee with scores of 3:6 and 3:6 in the round of 16. Dimova then competed in the consolation quarterfinals qualifiers, where she was defeated by Washington State's Elyse Tse with scores of 4:6 and 4:6.
In the gold draw, Elena Kraleva had a bye in the round of 16, and lost a close match against Washington State's Yura Nakagawa in the quarterfinals with scores of 3:6, 6:2, and a tie-breaking score of 9:11. Anastasia Aleksandra Nikolova also competed in the gold draw, where she fell to Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande with scores of 1:6 and 2:6. Nikolova then competed in the consolation quarterfinals qualifiers, where she had a dominant win over Idaho's Selin Sepken with scores of 6:1 and 6:3. Nikolova was then defeated by Portland's Alaia Rubio Perez with scores of 2:6 and 3:6 in the consolation semi-finals.
In the white draw, Shuanghui Huang fell to Gonzaga's Lia Espinal with scores of 0:6 and 1:6 the main draw round of 16, and competed in the consolation quarterfinals qualifiers where she was defeated by Portland's Rose Watanabe with scores of 1:6 and 0:6.
In doubles play, Lola Tavcar and Lamija Avdic paired up in the blue draw, where they defeated Idaho's Saffron Dowse and Lena Beckx with a score of 6:2. They then moved on to the quarterfinals, where they defeated Portland's Meagan Pearson and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez with a score of 7:5, moving them to the semi-finals round. In the semi-finals, Tavcar and Avdic lost a close match against Gonzaga's Lia Espinal and Rose Hayes with a score of 6:7.
Elena Kraleva and Anastasia Aleksandra Nikolova competed in the gold draw, where they defeated Portland's Rose Watanabe and Alaia Rubio Perez with a score of 6:3 in the round of 16. They then moved on to the quarterfinals, where they fell to Gonzaga's Kianna Oda and Emily Robertson 0:6. Yuna Kadowaki and Liliya Dimova also paired up in the gold draw, falling to Washington State's Lunda Kumhom and Yura Nakagawa with a score of 1:6. Dimova and Kadowaki then competed in the consolation quarterfinals qualifiers where they had a dominant win against Montana's Paula Dougherty and Jazmin Lerman with a score of 6:1.
Women's tennis will continue their play in the spring season, beginning with competition against North Dakota on Saturday, January 13.
