ABILENE,TX-- Seattle U's men's and women's cross country team will be traveling to Abilene, TX to compete in the WAC Championships on Friday, October 27th. The race will take place at Zoe Park, with the men's 8k taking place at 6 am PST and the women's 6k at 6:45 am PST.
The WAC Championships will kick off the posteason schedule for the Redhawks after an exciting regular season. On the women's side, sophomore Azalea Groleau has shined this season, breaking the school record for the women's 6k with her time of 20:56.3 at the George Oja Invitational on October 14th. Groleau has been instrumental in the women's team success this season by being the first Redhawk to cross the finish line at each race this season. The women's team has performed well and showed continued improvement this season by finishing in third place at the Linfield Harrier Classic on September 1st, second place at the Charles Bowles Invitational on September 30th, and first place at the George Oja Invitational on October 14th. Junior Lilianne Hargreaves and Senior Emily Harris also had some notable successes this season, setting new personal bests in both the 6k and 5k. Hargeaves with her times of 21:33.3 in the 6k and 17:51.3, earning her a seventh place spot in school history for the 6k and fourth place spot in the 5k. Harris' time of 21:26.9 in the 6k and 18:00.3 in the 5k, earned her an eigth place spot in school history for the 6k, and tied her fourteenth place in school history for the 5k.
On the men's side, junior eligible transfer from Winthrop University, Yonas Sauers, has soared since joining the Redhawks. Sauers broke the school record for the men's 8k with his time of 23:52.6 at the Charles Bowles Invitational on September 30th, finishing second overall in the race. At the George Oja Invitational on October 14th, Sauers finished in first place overall in the 8k out of 263 total runners, resulting in him being named the WAC Athlete of the Week. Sauers has been extremely important to the men's team this year, being the first Seattle U team member to cross the finish line at all three races this season.
The Redhawks hope to continue their successes at the WAC Championships this year.
