BLAINE, Wash. - Seattle U women's golf freshman Aaryanna Morris and the team finished as the runners-up at the 2023 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship after the final round on Tuesday. All three rounds took place at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine, Washington, on the 6,203 yards course with a par of 72.
The Redhawks gave everything they had in the final round, climbing up two spots with the second best team score of the day at eight-over 296. Seattle U was strong on the par threes and fives, finishing tied for first in par five average (4.95) and scoring (three-under) and second in par three average (3.17) and scoring (10-over). The team led the entire field in made birdies with 35.
Morris's (73-73-72) best round of the event moved her into a four-way tie for first place but she was unable to claim the medalist honors in the playoff. The tied for second place finish marks the best ever finish for the freshman. Morris tied for second in par four average (4.07) and scoring (two-over) as well as tied for fourth in par three average (3.00) and scoring (even). The Avondale, Arizona, native finished tied for third out of 57 golfers with 36 made pars and tied for seventh overall and second on the team with eight birdies.
Sophomore Rivekka Jumagulova grabbed her highest finish of the season, claiming sixth overall with a three-round total of 220 (75-72-73). Jumagulova tied for first in par three average (2.83) and scoring (two-under) as well as tied for sixth in par five average (4.83) and scoring (two-under). The 2021-22 WAC Freshman of the Year tied for seventh in made pars with 35 and converted eight birdies to tie Morris for seventh overall.
Graduate student Samantha Bruce concluded her Seattle U career with her ninth career top-10 finish, tying for seventh with a three-round total of 222 (70-77-75). Bruce tied for second in made birdies with 10 and tied for fourth in par three average (3.00) and scoring (even).
Sophomore Shayna Lu (81-77-76) improved over every round in her WAC Championship debut and senior Azumi Arai rounds out the team score with a three-round total of 237 (78-78-81).
