BLAINE, Wash. - Seattle U women's golf's Samantha Bruce leads after one round at the 2023 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship on Sunday, shooting a two-under 70. The Redhawks are currently tied for second place overall, posting a team score of eight-over 296. First round action took place at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine, Washington, on the 6,203 yards course with a par of 72.
The Redhawks ranked first in the field on the par fives in average (4.65) and scoring (seven-under) as well as making four more birdies than the next best team with 16 overall.
Bruce was at her best on the par fives, ranking first in average (4.25) and scoring (three-under) as well as tying for third in par three average (3.00) and scoring (even) and tying for sixth in par four average (4.10) and scoring (one-over). The native of Makati City, Philippines, is tied for first in made birdies with five. After a slow start through the first nine holes, Bruce found her swing on the back nine with four of her five birdies coming in that stretch.
Freshman Aaryanna Morris also sits in the top-five, finishing with a one-over 73. Morris was one of the best golfers on the par fours in the opening round, tying for second place in average (4.00) and scoring (even).
Sophomore Rivekka Jumagulova is tied for 12th after first round play, shooting a three-over 75. Jumagulova was the Redhawks top finisher in par three scoring, tying for first in the field in average (2.75) and scoring (one-under). Senior Azumi Arai (78) tied for second in par five average (4.50) and scoring (two-under), while sophomore Shayna Lu rounds out the team score with an 81.
Second round play of the WAC Championship will tee off on Monday at 8 a.m. with the Redhawks being one of the last teams to get underway at 10:30 a.m.
