Bellevue, Wash. - Seattle U baseball captured their second straight home conference series, taking down UT Arlington, 7-2, Sunday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. The Redhawks got an impressive outing from starter Blake Smith while the offense continued to put up runs in an all-around performance.
"We did a great job bouncing back from how we played yesterday," said head coach Donny Harrel after the win. "Blake was tremendous and we had a bunch of quality at-bats from our seniors who either drove in runs or put us in scoring position."
Smith, who was making his 5th start of the season, put up the best outing of his freshman campaign. After giving up two runs through two innings, he settled in and did not allow a single run over the next 5 1/3 to cruise to his second win.
Complimenting the stellar performance on the mound was an offense that continues to fire on all cylinders. The Redhawks scored seven runs on 15 hits, bringing their series tally to 22 runs on 35 hits. Trevor Antonson had a 4-hit day with three RBI to lead all players in both categories. Grant Heiser also had a solid game at the plate, driving in two runs on two hits. Jackson Lind and Kai Alberghini rounded out Redhawks with multi hit days with two apiece, while Michael Tsoukalas hit his fourth homerun of the season.
The Mavericks led 2-1 after the top half of the 3rd, before the Redhawks scored the final six runs on the day. Capped off by a 5-out save from Cameron Dayton, his third of the season, to secure the game 3 win and the series overall.
Seattle U now moves to 7-17 on the season and 5-7 in Western Athletic Conference play. The series win also made it back-to-back conference series wins at home for the Redhawks, who took their only other home series vs Utah Valley a couple weeks ago.
Following the win, the Redhawks will start a 4-game trip to Arizona starting on Tuesday, April 4, when they face Arizona State for a 1-game matchup. That will be followed by a 3-game series with preseason conference favorite Grand Canyon in Phoenix over the weekend.
