De La Cruz Has Multi-Home Run Game in Saturday Split

FULLERTON, Calif. – Seattle U softball split its two games on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic, taking down Fresno State, 9-4, before falling to Loyola Marymount, 4-8. Graduate student Jocelynn De La Cruz became the 11th Redhawk to record a multi-home run game, going 5-for-7 overall on the day with five RBIs. The nonconference contest took place at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, California.

FULLERTON, Calif. – Seattle U softball split its two games on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic, taking down Fresno State, 9-4, before falling to Loyola Marymount, 4-8. Graduate student Jocelynn De La Cruz became the 11th Redhawk to record a multi-home run game, going 5-for-7 overall on the day with five RBIs. The nonconference contest took place at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, California.

After today's results, the Redhawks hold a record of 13-5.

GAME ONE

De La Cruz got the scoring started in the first, smashing a three-run home run to center field to put the Redhawks in front early. The native of Menifee, Calif., crushed a solo home run in her very next at bat, tying Seattle U's single game home run record with her team leading fourth of the year. Carley Nance was the last Redhawk to record a multi-home run game, hitting the ball over the fence twice in a 7-0 win over Utah Tech on April 2, 2022. 

The Redhawks would add one more in the fourth with a Madison Kahwaty RBI double before scoring four more in the sixth. Kahwaty bagged two more RBIs on a single and then scored two batters later on an RBI double from Ava Sin. Sydney Frankenberger would drive in the final Redhawk run of the game, hitting a sacrifice fly to left to score Sin. 

After today's victory, the Redhawks improved to 3-0 against the Bulldogs this season.

GAME ONE SCORING 

  • First Inning: Jocelynn De La Cruz hit a three-run home run to center field. Fresno State got one back in the bottom half on one hit. 
  • Third Inning: De La Cruz hit a solo home run. 
  • Fourth Inning: Madison Kahwaty doubled down the left field line, scoring SU's fifth run of the game. 
  • Sixth Inning: Kahwaty singled to score another run. Ava Sin doubled to left field, later followed by a Sydney Frankenberger sac fly to score Sin. The Bulldogs would score two runs on three hits.
  • Seventh Inning: Fresno State gets one more on a home run. 
GAME TWO

After falling behind by two runs after the top half of the first, the Redhawks immediately tied it up in the bottom half. Jocelynn De La Cruz got SU on the board, smacking an RBI double to right center to score Madison Kahwaty who got on base after being hit by pitch. Ava Sin would advance De La Cruz to third on a single to the shortstop and Sydney Frankenberger would drive her home on a single up the middle. 

The Redhawks never gave up in this one, hitting three straight singles from De La Cruz, Kalyn Hill and Jasmine Wehn to load the bases with one out in the seventh. SU was able to score two runs in the inning but were unable to complete a comeback. 

Naomi Chaidez was stellar out of the bullpen, scattering two hits across three innings with three strikeouts. 

GAME TWO SCORING
  • First Inning: LMU scores two runs on two hits. Jocelynn De La Cruz doubled to right center, scoring the Redhawks first run. Sydney Frankenberger singles up the middle, tying the game at two all.
  • Third Inning: The Lions score two runs on three hits.
  • Fifth Inning: LMU adds four runs on four hits. 
  • Seventh Inning: Katie Walling reaches on an error by the shortstop, allowing two runs to score. 
Seattle U will conclude play at the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday, facing off with San Jose State and Minnesota at 9 and 11:15 a.m., respectively.
