SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball celebrated Kids Day with a victory, taking down Tarleton, 62-49, on Thursday morning. Three Redhawks finished in double figures, with sophomore Julianna Walker's 15 points leading the way on a perfect three-point shooting performance. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup took place at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.
This contest began with some back-and-forth action for both sides with the Texans taking a six point lead after the first eight minutes. A 6-0 run by the Redhawks late in the second quarter, capped off by a Peyton Howard three-pointer, propelled them in front at the halftime break.
Seattle U came out strong and fast after the break, outscoring Tarleton, 25-14, in the third quarter. The lead would grow to 15 midway through the third quarter after a key 15-2 run that included three made three-pointers. The Redhawks would hold off any comeback effort, holding the lead to at least 11 the rest of the game.
"We are happy we pulled out the victory," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We had a little bit of difficulty adjusting to the earlier start and struggled to hear at the beginning with all the kids bringing so much energy. After our halftime speech and some talk amongst our team members, we came out much better in the second half and took this game."
Julianna Walker paced Seattle U, scoring 15 points on five-for-five from three-point range in 14 minutes.
"I started to get my confidence back early," said Walker. "I've been working on my shot in the gym and felt I could just let it fly after a couple early makes. I couldn't have done it without all the hardwork my teammates put in to find me open or setting screens."
Junior Peyton Howard and sophomore Taliyah Clark both chipped in 11 on the afternoon, with the former adding two steals and the latter logging nine rebounds and three steals. Junior Irena Korolenko and freshman Mya Moore both recorded seven points and four rebounds, providing more depth scoring.
Seattle U had a great three-point shooting performance, knocking down 10 total threes on 20 attempts. The Redhawks went to work on the glass, out rebounding the Texan's 48-36 with 12 total offensive rebounds. The Redhawks played phenomenal on the defensive end, holding Tarleton to 23.8% from the field and only four three-pointers on 19% from long range.
Seattle U will conclude a three game home stand on Saturday afternoon, hosting UT Arlington at 3 p.m. in the Redhawk Center.
