SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball began its final home stretch of the season, dropping the opening game, 73-79, in overtime to Utah Tech on Thursday evening. Seattle U had four scorers in double figures with Irena Korolenko's 17 points leading the way. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup took place at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.
This game was back-and-forth from the get go, with Utah Tech scoring eight of the first 10 points and creating an eight point lead to end the first quarter. The Redhawks would battle back in the second, using a six-zero run midway through the quarter to make it a two point game and bring the score to 37-36 Utah Tech at halftime. Seattle U did a phenomenal job to get back into the game during the second quarter, outscoring the Trailblazers 21-14, with six Redhawks chipping in points.
Seattle U came out the better of the two teams after halftime, outscoring Utah Tech, 18-11, with Peyton Howard scoring 11 straight points for the Redhawks to give them the lead midway through the third quarter. The Trailblazers would not go away easily, tying the game with 46 seconds left before taking the lead with 26 seconds left. Mya Moore would score the last basket of regulation, receiving the ball in the paint and muscling her way to the basket. Kari Kyrkjebo would send this game to OT after blocking Maggie McCord's last second shot attempt.
In overtime, the Trailblazers would come out shooting, scoring the first six points and holding on for the victory.
The Redhawks concluded the evening with four scorers in double digits. Junior Irena Korolenko had 17 points, including five made threes, to go along with eight rebounds. Fellow junior Peyton Howard added 16 points, while sophomore Taliyah Clark posted 15 points and freshman Mya Moore had 10.
