LAS CRUCES, N. Mex. - Seattle U women's basketball began weekend road trip on Thursday evening, dropping a matchup with New Mexico State, 47-56. Junior Irena Korolenko recorded her first career double-double in the contest, logging a game-high 12 rebounds and team-high 14 points. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game took place at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The contest began with both teams going back-and-forth, with the Redhawks taking the lead early on after Taliyah Clark and Irena Korolenko hit back-to-back threes. New Mexico State would jump out in front midway through the second, using a 14-2 run to give them a seven point lead at halftime.
The Redhawks used a 8-1 run to get the lead down to four towards the end of the third quarter but were unable to ever tie it up. Both teams struggled to score in the fourth, allowing NM State to hold on to the victory.
"We had our chances in this game," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "It was unfortunate that we were unable to make key plays down the stretch."
New Mexico State's Taylor Donaldson was the leading scorer on the evening, logging 15 on 6-for-14.
Korolenko finished the evening with 14 points on 3-for-7 from the field, with all three makes coming from behind the three-point line.
"Irena played stellar on both sides of the ball," said Barcomb. "She provided us with great energy all night long."
Three Redhawks finished in double figures, with junior Peyton Howard (11) and freshman Mya Moore (10) joining Korolenko. Sophomore Taliyah Clark was just short of double digit points, chipping in eight.
Seattle U will conclude its weekend road trip on Saturday, facing off with Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. pacific time in Phoenix.
