PALM DESERT, Calif. – Seattle U women's golf begins the spring season Monday, taking part in the Mountain Classic Matchplay, cohosted by Boise State and Wyoming. The two-day event is scheduled to take place at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. The first round of matches tee off on Monday at 7 a.m. with round two starting after the conclusion of round one. The tournament will be concluded on Tuesday with the final round of play teeing off at 7 a.m.
Instead of the usual stroke play format, the Mountain Classic Matchplay includes team-based scoring where the teams compete in head-to-head matchups. Nevada and Boise State occupy the top two-seeds, while Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Southern Utah and the Redhawks round out of the field. Seattle U will send graduate student Samantha Bruce, seniors Azumi Arai and Megan Kelly and sophomores Annika Cruz, Rivekka Jumagulova and Samantha Yates. Five Redhawks will take part in match play action for scoring while the sixth Redhawk will compete as an individual.
Seattle U took home the tournament title last season, defeating Boise State in the finals, 3-2-0. The Redhawks opened the tournament with a convincing victory over Cal State Bakersfield, 4-1-0 before advancing to the tournament finals with a close victory over Cal State Fullerton. Arai, Bruce and Jumagulova were all members of the 2022 winning team.
