SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball concluded its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) home opening weekend on Saturday afternoon, dropping its matchup with Southern Utah, 62-75. The Thunderbirds took this game thanks to their presence on the glass, grabbing 48 total and 17 offensive compared to the Redhawks' 26 total and nine offensive. The matchup took place at the Redhawk Center in Seattle, Washington.
Southern Utah took control of this game quickly, taking as large as a nine point lead in the first quarter. Four quick points by sophomore Kari Kyrkjebo gave SU its first lead of the game at 34-33, but a 9-0 run by the Thunderbirds had them ahead entering the halftime break.
A seven point third quarter by junior Irena Korolenko had the Redhawks as close as six but the strong Southern Utah attack kept them in the lead. Freshman Mya Moore had a 6-0 run of her own midway through the fourth quarter but it was not enough in the end.
Southern Utah's Lizzy Williamson finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds to mark the only double-double of the game, while three Thunderbirds finished with 20 or more points.
Korolenko finished the afternoon as SU's leading scorer (14), shooting 6-for-15 from the field to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Today's performance marks the junior's fourth double-digit game of the bench this season.
Mya Moore was the second highest scorer, recording 12 points, while junior Peyton Howard also finished in double figures with 11.
Seattle U will conclude a three game home stand next Saturday, hosting Stephen F. Austin for the first time in program history at 2 p.m. in the Redhawk Center.
