ST. GEORGE, Utah - Seattle U women's basketball secured its second straight victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Utah Tech, 70-66. An all-around scoring attack, lead by sophomore Taliyah Clark's 17 points, pushed the Redhawks over the Trailblazers. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup took place at the Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.
"A total team effort today," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We shared the ball excellently, getting multiple players in the scoring column. Irena had a great overall game, competing on both ends of the floor, while Peyton played outstanding defense all game long. Mya gave us such a great boost inside, while Taliyah continued to help us with the hot hand offensively."
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Seattle U took control of the game during the second, outscoring Utah Tech, 19-12. SU's defense allowed them to take the lead, forcing three turnovers and limiting UT to 5-of-16 from the field and 2-for-9 from three.
In the second half, the Redhawks always had an answer when the Trailblazers started to mount a comeback. UT's Amber Kartchner drained a triple midway through the third to make it a five point game before freshman Lisa Michaelsen converted two free throws and fellow freshman Noemie Bariteau drained her sole three-pointer.
Emily Isaccson knocked down a transition three late in the fourth quarter to make it a three-point game but junior Irena Korolenko sealed the win with a free throw down at the other end.
After Clark was freshman Mya Moore, finishing with 15 points, while Korolenko added 12 and junior Peyton Howard chipped in 10.
The Redhawks had their best shooting performance of the season, going 26-for-53 (49.1%) from the field. Seattle U outscored Utah Tech in the paint, 32-22, and forced 17 turnovers on the afternoon.
Seattle U will return home for three straight, starting with Sam Houston on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m., celebrating National Women in Sports Day.
