OREM, Utah - Seattle U women's basketball claimed its second Western Athletic Conference (WAC) victory on Thursday night, overcoming a 17-point deficit against Utah Valley. Sophomore Taliyah Clark had a performance for the record books, tying Seattle U's DI record for made threes in a game with seven. Clark's performance matches Kaylee Best's seven made three against Grand Canyon in 2017. The WAC matchup took place at the UCCU Center on the campus of Utah Valley in Orem, Utah.
"We continued to battle all evening long," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We had a great team effort in that third quarter and manged to get ourselves back into the game. Taliyah hit some big time shots for us and worked really hard on the glass, while Irena's efforts on the boards were fantastic."
Utah Valley opened this matchup looking like it would take complete control, outscoring Seattle U, 20-5, in the first quarter. The Redhawks never looked out and began their comeback in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolverines, 19-12, with Clark draining three triples.
The Redhawks took over the contest in the third quarter, scoring 28 points on 11-for-13 from the field and limiting the Wolverines to just 14. Utah Valley brought the score to as close as six but a three-pointer followed by two free throws from freshman Asta Blauenfeldt helped to seal the victory.
Clark finished the night 7-for-8 (87.5%) on threes, logging new career-highs in points (25) and rebounds (nine) to go along with a block and a steal. Junior Irena Korolenko finished as the only player in double-digit rebounds, recording 11 on the evening for a new career-high.
The Redhawks worked really hard on the glass all night, out rebounding the Wolverines, 43-33, including 10 offensive rebounds. The SU bench was stellar once again, outscoring UVU's, 23-4.
Seattle U will remain in Utah to round out the weekend, heading south for a battle with Utah Tech at 1 p.m. pacific time on Saturday, Jan. 28.
