SEATTLE – Seattle U women's basketball played its middle game of a three game home stand on Tuesday night, falling to Eastern Washington, 60-66, in a very tightly contested matchup. Junior Peyton Howard and freshman Mya Moore provided SU with a strong combo on the evening, tallying 18 points each and combining for 13 total rebounds. The nonconference matchup was played at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.
"We had a great one two punch this evening with Mya and Peyton," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We were in this game because of the effort they gave us and they really helped to rally us in that fourth quarter. I loved the grit our team played with this evening and that we never gave up."
Both teams came out of the gates slow offensively, with the Redhawks trailing, 27-20, at halftime. Eastern Washington pushed their lead to as large as 15 in the third quarter before Seattle U began its comeback attempt in the fourth.
Howard's second three-pointer of the contest began a 10-0 run that had the Redhawks within two with under four minutes to play. Seattle U was not able to overcome with Eastern Washington holding on for the victory. The Eagle's Jaydia Martin lead all scorers with 23 points, while Jacin Buckley logged a game-high nine rebounds.
The Redhawks were effective on the offensive glass all evening, outscoring Eastern Washington on points in the paint (36-24) and finishing with nine offensive rebounds.
Peyton Howard finished with 18 points for a second straight contest, tying her career-high to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.
"Peyton is very coachable and reallystarting to understand what we are teaching her," said Barcomb. "She's been improving on her adjustments in the middle of a game and we saw that today."
Mya Moore had her best performance in a Redhawk uniform, logging 18 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists, all of which are career-highs. Moore's 18 came on a stellar shooting evening, making eight of 11 from the field.
"I just went out there confident in myself and my team," said Mya Moore. "Suzy provided us with a plan and we did our best to execute."
Seattle U will play its final nonconference home game on Monday, facing off with Cal Poly at 2 p.m. in the Redhawk Center.
