SEATTLE – Seattle U women's basketball opened play on the 2022-23 season with an exhibition matchup against Saint Martin's on Saturday. Junior Peyton Howard led all scorers with 21 points, helping the Redhawks take a 58-50 victory in front of their home crowd.
"We got an outstanding performance from Peyton tonight," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Her ability to convert from the free throw line really carried us through some tough shooting droughts."
Howard finished 15-18 (83.4%) from the free throw line to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Seattle U would never trail in this matchup after freshman Lisa Michaelsen made a layup in the first 12 seconds. The Saints would make it as close as four in the fourth quarter before SU made some clutch free throws to put the game away. The Redhawks outscored the Saints in points off turnovers (16-5), second chance points (8-2), points in the paint (30-24) and fast break points (5-0).
The Saints committed 18 total turnovers as sophomore Julianna Walker recorded a game-high three steals and freshman Asta Blauenfeldt added two of her own. The Redhawks out rebounded the Saints, 38-37, with Howard's eight leading the team and freshman Mya Moore logging seven of her own.
Seattle U will open the 2022-23 season on the road against Oregon State in Corvallis on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Plus Network.
