SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball suffered its first defeat of the season Monday night, dropping a 77-66 decision to University of Washington in the teams' annual crosstown clash.

SEATTLE – Seattle U men's basketball suffered its first defeat of the season Monday night, dropping a 77-66 decision to University of Washington in the teams' annual crosstown clash.

The Redhawks move to 5-1 on the season, their best start through six games since the 2007-08 season. UW improves to 6-1 on the year.

The Huskies led by as many as 12 on two occasions in the first half, including a 23-11 advantage with 10:14 to go. But paced by Alex Schumacher with 13 points and Cameron Tyson with 10, the Redhawks rallied, scored the final seven points of the half and carried a 40-38 lead into the break.

A 26-16 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive boards that led to 13 second-chance points, was key, as was six made threes, including two from Tyson and two from Riley Grigsby, who returned to the lineup for the first time since Nov. 13.

Seattle U stretched its lead to seven, 47-40, early in the second half as Viktor Rajković scored five straight points. Tyson would knock down a stepback three at the 16:38 mark to make it 50-44, Seattle U.

A string of three consecutive Redhawk turnovers gave the Huskies life, and six straight points, including back-t-back dunks by Cole Bajema and Jean Brooks, Jr., to knot the score at 50-all. UW would take a 52-50 lead on a pair of Brooks free throws, before Tyson's fourth three halted the 8-0 run.

But UW continued to roll off another 14 unanswered points as the Redhawks went scoreless for over five minutes, opening up a 66-53 advantage with eight minutes to play.

Tyson finished with 18 points and seven boards to lead Seattle U. Schumacher added 15 points, five assist and four rebounds. Grigsby and Rajković chipped in 10 apiece to round out four in double figures.

UW was paced by Brooks' 20 points. Braxton Meah added 18, including 7-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

As a team, the Huskies were 22-of-26 from the free-throw line while the Redhawks went a perfect 8-of-8.

Seattle U has a quick turnaround, hosting reigning Big West Conference Tournament Champion Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday int he first of four games this season to be contested at Climate Pledge Arena. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
