SEATTLE – Seattle U women's basketball opened the 2022-23 home schedule on Thursday night, falling to Portland State in overtime, 73-80. Sophomore Taliyah Clark and Julianna Walker both set new career-highs in points, finishing with 19 and 18, respectively. The nonconference matchup was played at the Redhawk Center in Seattle.
"I thought we battled back incredibly well," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We have a very young team with little in-game experience and that showed in those final minutes. It's a tough lesson to learn but we will continue to grow from them."
The Redhawks and Vikings went back and forth in the first half, with the away team up one at halftime. Taliyah Clark knocked down a corner three-pointer on an assist from Peyton Howard to open the second half, putting the Redhawks in front by two. With the game tied at 62 all, Walker converted on her third three-pointer of the fourth quarter to give the Redhawks a three point advantage with 1:27 left in the game.
Portland State's Jada Lewis would make an and one three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Clark and Walker would hit back to back threes to give SU a one point lead with 2:26 to play before Portland State ended the matchup on an eight zero run.
The game was very close from the jump, with the lead changing 18 total times. Seattle U made the most of its second chance opportunities, scoring 22 points on 18 offensive rebounds while holding Portland State to just five points on seven offensive rebounds. The Redhawks played strong defensively as well, forcing 20 total turnovers and collecting 10 steals.
Clark finished with a new career-high (19) that included five made three-pointers to go along with five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
"They were playing a high zone which really opened the corner shots for me," said Clark. "After I knocked down a few, the paint really started to open up."
Walker found her three point stroke this evening, converting on six three-pointers for a new career-high 18 points. Freshman Mya Moore was the final Redhawk in double figures, finishing with 10 for a new career-high.
The Redhawks will play one more at home before heading on the road, taking on UC Irvine Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Redhawk Center.
