SPOKANE, Wash. - Seattle U men's tennis completed its first day at the ITA Regional Fall Tournament on Thursday, with graduate student Clement Hamel advancing to the round of 16. The first day's matches took place at the Stevens Center on the campus of Gonzaga University.
After a bye in the round of 36, Hamel (6-3, 7-6) started the tournament with a dominant victory over Washington's Brett Pearson. The native of Caen, Normandie, France, will face off against Oregon's August Gustafson in the round of 16 on Friday.
Sophomores Michael Frank and Veselin Kiselkov also earned victories on day one. Frank defeated Oregon's Russell Soohoo, 6-3, 7-6, while Kiselkov (6-3, 6-1) controlled his match against Eastern Washington's Tyler Dalos. In the round of 32, Frank (4-6, 3-6) would fall to Washington's Rikuto Yamaguchi after a hard fought match and Kiselkov (6-7,4-6) would suffer a similar fate against Oregon's Vlad Breazu.
Freshman Yu-Han Hsieh (6-3, 4-6, 6-0) would add a victory of his own in the round of 64, defeating Portland State's Gregory Grunig in a hard fought third set. Han Hsieh was unable to continue that into the next round, dropping his match to Tom Hann, 6-0, 6-3.
Jayden Harrison (1-6, 4-6) faced off against Eastern Washington's Drew Dillion, while Filip Stipic (6-7, 2-6) batled against Ray Lo and Dario Ristovski (2-6, 6-2, 3-6) almost came back to defeat Portland State's Simon Kuszynski in set three.
In doubles, Han Hsieh and Stipic teamed up to defeat Eastern Washington's Brady Thomas and Drew Dillon, 8-3, advancing to the round of 16. Frank will pair with Ristovksi, while Hamel will team up with Kiselkov for doubles action to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
