SPOKANE, Wash. - Seattle U men's tennis finished play at the ITA Northwest Regionals, hosted by Gonzaga, in Spokane, Washington, on Saturday. The highlight of the tournament was graduate student Clement Hamel reaching the quarterfinal round in singles play, becoming the first Redhawk ever to do so.
"There were many great performances by our team in this tournament," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander "It was great to see that we can compete with the likes of Oregon and Washington. Clement had a fantastic run and I am proud of his accomplishments."
The graduate transfer from Caen, Normandie, France, opened the tournament with a dominant win over Washington's Brett Pearson (7-6, 6-3) in the round of 32 and continued that momentum against Oregon's August Gustafson (6-1, 6-4) to advance to the quarterfinals. Hamel's tournament run would end there, falling to Oregon's Vlad Breazu by a score of 3-6, 3-6.
Hamel continued his impressive tournament in doubles play, pairing with sophomore Veselin Kiselkov. After starting the tournament with a bye, the duo (8-6) picked up a narrow victory over Washington's Brett Pearson and Rikuto Yamaguchi in the round of 16. The pair's tournament would conclude in the quarterfinal round after falling to Oregon's Breazu and Gustafson by a score of 4-8. Sophomores Michael Frank and Dario Ristovksi also made an appearance in the quarterfinal round, dropping their match against Oregon's Lo and Vandercasteele, 3-8.
The Redhawks will open the spring dual match season on January 17 at Washington.
