SEATTLE - Seattle U men's soccer got the win in their conference opener, 2-1, over UTRGV Friday night at Championship Field.

THe Redhawks would score the opening goal of the match, with it coming from one of the newest members of the program. In the 13th minute, SU had a corner that was sent into the box and after a scrum for the ball it landed at the feet of Jesse Ortiz. He was able to flick it on to freshman Yeider Zuluaga, who buried the opener and his first career goal.

"I was thrilled with Yeider's goal," said head coach Pete Fewing. "Those are a lot easier to than they are to make so for him to get it on frame is fantastic"

The Vaqueros would quickly respond to the Redhawk goal by equalizing less than 10 minutes later, sending the match into halftime level.

It would be a back and forth affair in the second half, with both sides trying to find the go ahead goal. The home side would be the ones to finally breakthrough.

in the 69th minute, Ortiz would collect the ball inside of the Vaqueros' box. He would take a touch just outside of the box with a defender on his back, before turning and firing a shot that slipped just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

"Jesse's goal was fantastic," Fewing added. "He knew exactly where he was going as soon as he took his first touch."

The Redhawks were able to hold on to their lead this time, winning their WAC opener, 2-1.

The win also pushed goalkeeper Akili Kasim into first place in wins in the programs modern Division I history with 31. Kasim tied Shane Haworth for 1st after their win over Notre Dame to start the season, with tonight's win giving him sole custody of the top spot.
