SAN FRANCISCO - Seattle U men's soccer earned a hard fought draw with San Francisco, 1-1, in the Bay Area Thursday night. Despite falling behind early, the Redhawks were able to battle back for the result.
For only the second time this season, the Redhawks conceded the first goal of the match when the Dons were able to take the lead in the 26th minute. That scoreline would hold into the halftime break.
The Redhawks had plenty of chances to score in the match. Declan McGlynn was denied a goal by the woodwork on three separate occasions, as the Redhawks just couldn't find the equalizer. That was until the 76th minute.
A cross from Luke Hammond was whipped in and Jesse Ortiz was on the receiving end, as the midfielder was able to slot the ball home and level the match at one. It was Ortiz's first goal since Aug. 25 of last year, after missing the majority of last season due to an injury.
"Really proud seeing Jesse get that goal after his injury last season," said head coach Pete Fewing. "Real proud of the guys for battling back after falling behind early, I like the resiliency."
The match would end with that 1-1 scoreline, as the Redhawks secured their first draw of the season and improved to 1-2-1 on the season.
Seattle U will be back in action as they face another highly ranked team in the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday, Sep. 15, in Corvallis. The Redhawks and Beavers played earlier in the season in an exhibition match that saw SU get the convincing 3-0 win. Kickoff between the Redhawks and Beavers is set for 6:00 pm PT.
