SEATTLE - Seattle U Volleyball began its 2022 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schedule on Thursday, hosting Grand Canyon in front of a raucous crowd that marked the first match at the Redhawk Center this season. The Lopes would take the victory in this matchup, defeating the Redhawks three sets to one (18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 19-25).
The Redhawks were unable to gain the advantage in set one but a 15-7 start in set two brought the match level at one apiece. An eight point run in set three and six point streak in set four would be deciding factors in the Lopes earning the victory.
Seattle U continued its double-digit block streak, marking a fourth straight match with at least 10 blocks. Marley Hardgrave continues to be a block machine, posting six total blocks in this match and 31 overall this season. Ezgi Ozkan and Lauren McCabe added four total blocks of their own, while Merima Smajlovic registered three block assists.
Arianna Bilby lead the team in digs with 14, while Katlyn Sipes logged 13 for her sixth straight double-digit match and Erin Goya recorded eight.
On offense, Ozkan posted 26 assist to improve her streak of 25+ assist matches to eight. Shanice Horn and McCabe tied for the team lead in kills with eight, while Bilby and Smajlovic both added seven of their own. Smajlovic's seven kills sets a new career high for the freshman from Istanbul, Turkey.
Seattle U hits the road for one match, traveling to Orem, Utah, to face off with the 2021 WAC Tournament Champions, Utah Valley, on Saturday.
