SEATTLE — Seattle University volleyball and third-year head coach Michelle Cole announced the 2022 season schedule on Tuesday.
The Redhawks' slate is comprised of 22 regular season matches, featuring seven Western Athletic Conference (WAC) dates at the Redhawk Center, and boosts six teams ranked among last season's NCAA RPI Top 150.
"We are so happy to be able to finalize our schedule," said Cole. "With 13 new faces on our roster, we want them to be challenged as well as have an opportunity to build chemistry during the preseason."
Seattle U will unofficially open the season with an exhibition against Seattle Pacific on Aug. 22 before holding the third annual Red-White Scrimmage on Aug. 24.
The Redhawks will then travel to three tournaments on three consecutive weekends. The season opens in Fresno, Calif., at the Fresno State Invitational with matches against Fresno State (9/2), San Francisco (9/2) and Louisiana Tech (9/3). The Redhawks will then make the cross country trip to Louisville, Ky., for the Bellarmine Invitational to take on Bellarmine (9/9), IUPUI (9/9) and Gardner Webb (9/10), before returning to the Pacific Northwest for two matches in Portland, Ore., against Portland State (9/17) and Portland (9/17) at the Portland Invitational.
Seattle U opens the 2022 WAC season with its home opener against Grand Canyon on Sep. 22, featuring a rally towel giveaway. A matchup with the 2021 WAC Tournament Champions, Utah Valley, is next in Orem, Utah, on Sep. 24 before returning to the Redhawk Center for four matches.
A stretch of home matches opens with Leukemia Awareness Night against Sam Houston State on Sep. 29, followed by a rematch against Utah Valley on Oct. 8. Stephen F. Austin is the next opponent on Oct. 13, while WAC newcomer UT Arlington makes it second ever trip to Seattle on Oct. 15 to end the home stand.
The Redhawks then head on a four-match road trip, starting with its first ever match against WAC newcomer Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, on Oct. 20. Two days later, they will head to St. George for a matchup with newly branded Utah Tech before traveling to Abilene Christian on Oct. 27. The road trip concludes at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Tex., on Oct. 29.
Seattle U's next two matches are its final home matches of the season with UTRGV coming to town on Nov. 3, followed by Senior Day against New Mexico State on Oct. 5.
SU then heads to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon on Nov. 10 and conclude the regular season in Riverside, Calif., against California Baptist two days later.
"Our returners have spent a lot of time preparing themselves to lead this young team through a tough preseason and even better conference season," said Cole. "Our seniors are very clear what they want to achieve this year and I can't wait to see how that inspires the rest of the team."
The 2022 WAC Championships is slated to start Nov. 17 and will be held at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg, Tex.
