LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Seattle U Redhawks fell 8-1 in the first game of the weekend series at New Mexico State Friday. The loss ends a four-game win streak for the Redhawks and is the first series-opening loss for the Redhawks in WAC play since April 23, 2021. The Redhawks had won each of the last six opening games in conference series.
 
Seattle U goes to 21-15 overall and 7-3 in WAC play after today's loss.
 
Stefanie Madrigal suffered the first WAC loss of her career, making her 10-1 all-time against conference opponents. Naomi Chaidez saw action in the circle as well, allowing two hits in two innings of work.
 
McKenna Crum had her first career multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with Seattle U's lone run scored. The Redhawks threatened often but couldn't find the big hits: Seattle U loaded the bases in the third and put two in scoring position in the fourth but were unable to score in either frame.
 
SCORING
  • Second Inning: Back-to-back homers by New Mexico State made it 3-0.
  • Third Inning: New Mexico State strung together three straight singles to push two more runs across.
  • Fourth Inning: Two errors in the inning proved costly as New Mexico State stretched its lead to 7-0.
  • Sixth Inning: After Crum's second hit of the day, Taylor DeDen's single to right allowed the freshman to score, making it 7-1. New Mexico State responded with a triple to make it 8-1.
 
NOTES
  • Olivia Viggiano (1x4) extended her hitting streak to seven games.
  • DeDen (1x3, RBI) is hitting .429 over her last five appearances.
     
The Redhawks and Aggies will play a doubleheader tomorrow, with game one beginning at 3:00 pm PT.
