BELLEVUE – Seattle U baseball picked up a big win in their home opener, taking down UBC, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Bannerwood Park.
The Redhawks (2-7) fell behind early but scored runs in three straight innings to snag the win and get back to winning ways in the 2022 season.
UBC (10-11) was able to jump ahead courtesy of a 2-run homerun in the top of the third inning.
Seattle U would snag one back in the fourth, as Shane Jamison scored on a fielder's choice. The Redhawks would add on to their lead in the fifth, when Kyle Sherick hit a 2-run homerun for the home side, his first of the season.
After UBC tied the game up in the top of the sixth, SU would take the lead right back in the bottom half. Grant Heiser pinch hit for Matt Boissoneault and proceeded to hit a solo shot to left field, also his first of the season. Seattle would keep the inning going when Connor O'Brien came around to score on an RBI single by Jackson Reed.
Brady Liddle got the start on the bump, going six innings while giving up three hits and three earned runs. He added six strikeouts and picked up his first win of the season in his third start.
The bullpen would take over after the sixth and didn't allow a single run to score in the final four frames. Mason Hoover, Morgan White and Alex McBee combined to only give up four hits while striking out six to put the game away. McBee picked up the save, his first of the season.
The win improved the Redhawks to 2-7 on the season and gave them a 5-1 advantage all-time vs the Thunderbirds.
On deck for SU is a one game road matchup with crosstown rivals the University of Washington on Tuesday, March 8. First pitch from Husky Ballpark is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
