COTO DE CAZA, Calif. - Seattle U men's golf opened its 2022 spring season with a strong showing at the Orange County Classic, finishing fourth out of 10 teams. Seniors Nathan Cogswell (70-75-74) and Jack Rahon (74-72-73) led the way for Seattle U, tying for second with three-round totals of 219.
"Its great to have them both back healthy and competing at a high level," said Head Coach Marc Chandonnet. "It is nice to have an opportunity to win our first event this spring and definitely something we can use to build on as we get our championship season started. These guys are not just interested in earning individual wins alone as we are all focused on getting the elusive team victory. It is very difficult to win at this level but if they both clean up some of the little things they'll certainly have many more chances at it."
SU posted a team score of 30-over 894, with its best round of 295 coming in the second round on Monday. The two-day, 54-hole event took place at the Coto de Caza South Course in Coto De Caza, Calif., on the 6,950 yards course with a par of 72.
Rahon led the field in par four scoring, shooting an average of 3.9 and being four strokes better than the next best golfer. Cogswell was consistent throughout the tournament, making 12 birdie puts over the two-day event.
Both start off the spring campaign strong after each winning one Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Golfer of the Week award in the fall. Rahon earned the team's first honor for his performance at the Husky Invitational, finishing fourth with the second most made birdies in the tournament, while Cogswell earned his award by also finishing fourth at the Oregon State Beaver Invitational where he led the field in made birdies and tied for second in par five scoring average.
Freshman Liam Gill (79-71-76) was the next best Redhawk, shooting his best collegiate round so far of a one-under 71 in the second round. Rounding out the team score for Seattle U is senior Federico Gutierrez and sophomore Blake Kukula, finishing with three rouond totals of 232 (77-78-77) and 234 (78-77-79) respectively.
The Redhawks next scheduled event takes them to Palm Desert, Calif., for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club from March 2-4.
