SAN ANTONIO – Seattle U baseball dropped both games in a doubleheader on Friday, as they opened a four-game series with UTSA. The Redhawks fell 3-7 in the opener and then 2-3 in the second.
GAME 1: Seattle U 3, UTSA 7
A Shane Jamison double down the left field line brough home Conner O'Brien and Gavin Rork, as the Redhawks struck first in the third inning. Grant Heiser would add another after his own RBI double and SU would lead 3-0.
Getting his second start of the season was Nestor German. The righty went 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, while striking out two on 81 pitches.
The Roadrunners were able to get two runs back in the fourth and eventually tied the ballgame in the fifth on a sac fly.
After getting out to a hot start, the Redhawks were blanked the rest of the way as UTSA did not give up a hit after the third inning. Seattle U would go on to give up four runs in the sixth as the home squad took game one, 3-7.
GAME 2: Seattle U 2, UTSA 3
Seattle U got a strong start from Peter Chronowski in game two of the double header. The junior went six innings, giving up only three hits and one run with seven strikeouts on 80 pitches.
Despite the start, the Roadrunners got out to a lead in the second on an RBI single. That would be the only run given up by Chronowski.
The home team added a couple of more in the seventh as they extended their lead to three.
The Redhawks would begin their comeback in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Gavin Rork and Aidan Welch both came up with RBIs to cut the deficit to just one.
In the ninth inning Julian Kodama was able to reach on a fielding error and was advanced to second on a Grant Heiser single. The two moved up 90-feet on a passed ball with two outs in the inning. With two runners in scoring position, the Redhawks would come up just short of tying the game after a groundout ended the comeback effort with a final of, 2-3.
SU will look to bounce back tomorrow, Feb 26 as the Roadrunners and Redhawks battle it out in game three of the four game series. Brady Liddle is scheduled to get the start on the mound for Seattle U with first pitch set for 10 AM PT.
