SEATTLE  – The Seattle U Redhawks triumphed in overtime, 71-68, over the UTRGV Vaqueros Wednesday night. It was a furious comeback for the Redhawks, who took their first lead with 4:34 left in the fourth quarter thanks to 45% shooting in the second half, including 55% from deep.

UTRGV made the first shot of the fourth quarter, stretching their lead to 15 points. That was when the Redhawks pounced: Seattle U went on a 20-2 run after that, including a 18-0 stretch. UTRGV would not score for over four minutes and didn't make a field goal for five as the Redhawks took over.

Seattle U's defense led to offense all night long. The Redhawks forced 28 turnovers, their most since forcing 31 against Portland State in 2015. Bree Calhoun had seven steals, matching her career high and just one away from the single-game Seattle U record. In all, Seattle U had 15 steals, its most since 16 at Chicago State on January 29, 2021.

That defensive performance carried over into overtime. Seattle U allowed UTRGV to make just two field goals, both coming with under 30 seconds left in the game after Seattle U had stretched the lead to multiple possessions.

Courtney Murphy moved to second in Seattle U history in three pointers, making her 168th. Murphy now trails only Kaylee Best for made threes in the Seattle U record book. Murphy also made it her third 200-point season, scoring seven in the game.

Taliyah Clark was a big part of Seattle U's late push. All eight of her points came in the fourth quarter. She was one of many Redhawks to chip in offensively: seven different players scored over five points for Seattle U, with three in double figures.

Seattle U hits the road to play California Baptist this weekend, playing Saturday, February 19 at 1:00 pm PT.
