PALM DESERT, Calif. - Seattle U women's golf starts its spring slate of tournaments Monday with the Mountain Classic Match Play, co-hosted by Boise State and Wyoming, in Palm Desert, California.The two day, 54 hole event is scheduled to take place from Feb. 14-15 at the Classic Club on the 6,081 yards course with a par of 72.
Instead of the usual stroke play format, the Mountain Classic Match Play includes team-based scoring where the teams compete in head-to-head matchups. Seattle U is ranked as the top-seed and will compete against eighth-ranked CSUB in match one, starting at 7 a.m. Monday. In the second round, Seattle U will be up against either the hosts, Wyoming, or Cal State Fullerton. To view the full match play bracket, click HERE.
The tournament will include eight teams total with the other seven being Boise State, CSU Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Montana State, Portland State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. Seattle U will send graduate student Keisha Lugito, senior Samantha Bruce, junior Azumi Arai and freshman Rivekka Jumagulova and Shayna Lu.
During the fall season, freshman Rivekka Jumagulova won two Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Golfer of the Week awards, while the Redhawks sweep the awards at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational.
Jumagulova won her first WAC Golfer of the Week award for the week of September 15-21, after her stellar performance at the Gonzaga Invitational in just her second collegiate tournament. The Almaty, Kazakhstan, native's play was extremely consistent as she shot a three-round total of 214 (70-73-71) and finished with the best par three scoring.
The Redhawks captured their sole team victory of the fall at their own tournament, the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational. SU posted a team score of 21-over 885, leading all teams in par three scoring average and tied for first in par five scoring average.
Jumagulova completed the trophy sweep for SU as she claimed the individual title, setting the school record for lowest 54-hole total at 211 (70-73-68). The freshman picked up her second WAC Golfer of the Week award because of this performance.
