SEATTLE – Darrion Trammell and Riley Grigsby combined for 46 points and Seattle U's defense returned in convincing 73-51 win over UC San Diego Sunday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
The win snapped a short two game skid for the Redhawks, who improved to 8-3 on the season and a dominant 8-1 in home games. The Tritons dropped to 5-3 overall.
It was the perfect combination of offense and defense to begin the game as Seattle U create a 17-point lead at the 10-minute mark thanks to an explosive 19-2 run. Trammell had 10 of his game-high 29 points during the opening run, setting the tone for the night.
The Tritons were forced into 11 first half turnovers that the Redhawks used to get high quality shots in transition. SU knocked down 55 percent of their attempts and took a 37-23, 14-point lead into the break.
"Our defense came back tonight, " said Interim Head Coach Chris Victor. "We struggled the last two games, we weren't us on defense. We weren't following our principles and weren't playing Seattle U basketball on the defensive end. Tonight looked a lot more like us and we need to continue to do that day in and out."
The second half featured the same formula for success as Seattle U continued to build up its lead with great defense. The largest scoring run that the Tritons were able to create was 8-0 and were never able to get within 10 points in the second half.
Joe Wall knocked down a 3-pointer at the 0:24 mark and pushed the differential to the game high of 23 in favor of the home team.
Trammell collected his 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from three.
"Darrion looked a lot more comfortable and aggressive," said Victor. "He wasn't thinking as much, he was just playing. Darrion is really hard to guard when he's the aggressor and that's what he was tonight - getting to the rim, three-point shot falling and creating opportunities for other guys."
Grigsby finished with 17 points on 8-of-12 from the field. Offensive efficiency was the name of the game for Seattle U, which shot 54% from the field and held a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.
The defense also never let up, as UCSD finished just 39% from the field and 26% from three as no Triton would reach double figures. Bryce Pope led the way for UC San Diego with eight points.
Next up will be a cross town showdown with the University of Washington on Saturday, Dec. 18. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off from Alaska Airlines Arena.
