SEATTLE - Seattle University men's soccer rolled to a 4-0 win over Houston Baptist on Friday night. Declan McGlynn scored twice, while Levonte Johnson's goal came in between McGlynn's two and Sam Tessler scored his first Redhawks goal in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at Championship Field.
"That was a really good win for us," said Head Coach Pete Fewing."HBU's record doesn't reflect how good of a team they are and we really had to weather the pressure they brought to us. It was great for us to get all those goals."
Seattle U (10-7-0, 6-3-0 WAC) got off to a fast start as Johnson drove the ball down the sideline and crossed in a ball that found McGlynn's feet. After the goal, Akili Kasim was tested twice by the Houston Baptist forwards but preserved the shutout after two stellar saves. The Redhawks controlled the majority of the possession going into halftime and outshot the Huskies, 8-4.
SU ran away with the game in the second half as Johnson scored on a rebound in the 61st minute and McGlynn got his second after a pass from Noe Meza in the 69th minute. McGlynn's second goal came off a great individual effort where he blew by two Houston Baptist defenders and flicked the ball over the goalie and into the bottom corner.
Tessler scored the final goal of the evening in the 79th minute after a cross bounced around and found its way to the senior who guided it into the left side of the net. Seattle U outshot Houston Baptist, 17-7, and had all of the corners in this match with six
Akili Kasim recorded his fifth shutout of the season, making four saves overall in the WAC contest.
Seattle U will continue its run of home matches on Sunday with a matchup against Chicago State at Championship Field, starting at 1 p.m.
