SEATTLE – Seattle University women's soccer beat Portland, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Jolie St Louis scored late in the first half and the SU defense did the rest as the Redhawks stretched their unbeaten streak to five games with the victory at Championship Field.

"I was very happy with our performance today against a very solid Portland team," said Coach Julie Woodward. "I feel we have 20-plus starters on this team and our ability to have such impact off the bench is special. The team followed the game plan. They were disciplined and played with urgency and heart. I'm very proud of Jolie for scoring her first goal in a much-needed moment."

After a back-and-forth start to the day, the Redhawks (4-1-1) began to tilt the field in their direction. Using the strength and accuracy of its defenders' legs, SU continually went over the top of the Portland defense. Sydney Carr found success beating her defender as the half wore on, but the visitors kept the match scoreless until late in the half.

In the 42nd minute, Kate Connelly won possession and found Gabe Jillings, who turned into open space near midfield. She sent a ball ahead to St Louis, who ran past the defense and then looked to dish off to her right. Jillings hustled forward and cycled a cross back to the far post, where St Louis touched in a ball that went over the head of the UP goalkeeper for the game's first score.

The hosts largely controlled play in the second half, as well, hemming the Pilots in their own end for long periods of action. SU put together several solid chances, but Portland prevented any more goals.

Jessica Berlin and the Seattle U backline kept the action clean on its end, successfully turning away UP tries and running out the clock for SU's third shutout of the season.

SU outshot UP, 12-8, on the day. Both sides earned two corner kicks.

The Redhawks travel to Washington State for another non-conference match on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Pullman.
