SPOKANE, Wash. – The Seattle U Redhawks split their Friday doubleheader, sweeping Air Force in three sets before falling in three sets to host Gonzaga. The Redhawks' first win of the year came in convincing fashion, with Seattle U defeating Air Force 25-18, 25-21, 28-26, only to fall to Gonzaga 13-25, 19-25, 21-25.
GAME ONE
Seattle U only once trailed by more than three, falling behind 2-6 in the third set. The Redhawks would eventually fight off two different Air Force set points before winning the set and the match on Lilly Eason's ace.
Sierra Bartley was the star in game one of the day, racking up a career-best 15 kills while making just two errors, good for a sizzling .520 hitting percentage. In all, the Redhawks hit .291 in the victory. Julia Queiroz and Amaris Carter were a big part of the defense that forced Air Force into 18 attack errors: that duo combined for six of Seattle U's eight blocks, with Carter also adding six kills.
Seattle U kept up its usual strong serving game as well: the Redhawks had eight aces, the third time in five matches they've reached that mark. Ezgi Ozkan led the way with three, just one off her career high in service aces, set November 17, 2019.
GAME TWO
Seattle U fought back after a tough start but were unable to clinch a set against Gonzaga. A late run in the third set had the look of big things for the Redhawks, who pulled it to within a 20-22 game before Gonzaga was able to take the win.
Eve Kerschenbaum had five kills in the first set alone en route to another double-digit kill night. Bartley had nine kills and just one error to lead the Redhawks with a .381 hitting percentage.
With 16 assists, Ozkan broke the 1200-assist mark in her career in the match. That made her just the fourth Redhawk in the D-I era to reach that mark, joining Jamie Mellies, Kerry Lane, Shae Harris, and Jacquie Brice.
The weekend wraps up tomorrow for the Redhawks with one match against Oklahoma at 11:00 am PT.
