PULLMAN, Wash. - Seattle U women's tennis wrapped up play at the WSU Cougar Classic on Sunday with freshman Mireia Fehr winning the championship match in the Reds singles bracket. Fehr beat Portland State's Majo Hernandez in two identical sets of 6-2, 6-2. The Pfaeffikon, Switzerland, native was dominant in her three matches this weekend, finishing 3-0 overall.
"Mireia showed great composure today," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "Winning her singles flight is a great accomplish and we are all very proud of her."
Fellow freshman Elena Kraleva (1-6, 6-4, (8-10)) narrowly lost her championship match against Washington State's Savannah Ly-Nguyen in the Crimson singles bracket. This was a bright start for the Burgas, Bulgaria, native as she finished 3-1 overall in singles play.
"Elena gave it her all in this match and just came up a little short in the super tiebreaker," said Hollander. "I am extremely proud of her and all our players for how they competed this weekend. This was a great experience for our team as there were a lot of really tough matches."
Freshman Jade Quintana (3-6, 6-7) was the final Redhawk in singles action as she fell to Montana's Aili Hietal in the third-place game of the Red singles bracket.
The Seattle U doubles pairing of Kraleva and Quintana (8-6) defeated Utah State's Lisa Kung and Gabi Dekkers in a close match for third place in the Crimson doubles draw. The final doubles pairing of freshmen Liliya Dimova and Fehr (5-8) round out Seattle U's matches on Sunday as they dropped their third-place match to Eastern Washington's Isabella Foshee and Jennifer Kida in the Gray doubles draw.
The Redhawks will conclude their fall tournament schedule with the ITA Regional Championships from October 22-26 in Palo Alto, Calif.
