SEATTLE – Hallie Bergford scored in the 98th minute to lift Seattle University women's soccer to a 1-0 win over Eastern Washington Thursday afternoon. The victory marked SU's second straight OT win as the Redhawks celebrated their home opener at Championship Field.
"I'm happy our team remained patient throughout the course of the game," said Coach Julie Woodward. "It wasn't pretty, but they got the job done. I continue to be impressed with their resiliency in overtime. Both goalkeepers were great in the shutout and Hallie scored a beautiful goal."
After a scoreless regulation, SU looked for the golden goal in overtime. Late in the first extra session, the Redhawks earned a throw-in. Kacey LaBoda stepped forward and found Bergford posted up near the upper left corner of the box. The sophomore turned and fired a shot to the back post that found paydirt, pushing SU to a win in the home premiere.
Lexi Davis, making her first career start, stood out in the first half, cleanly handling two saves to keep the visitors off the board. SU worked well to move the ball down the field at times in the first half, but the Eagles turned away any chances. The Redhawks outshot EWU, 9-7, in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the hosts controlled play for the majority of the period. Madison Waguespack claimed one save, but the SU backline kept things clean otherwise. The Redhawks tried 11 second-half shots, but the Eagles kept the match scoreless and forced overtime.
SU outshot Eastern Washington, 22-9, in the contest.
Seattle U (3-1-1) hosts Portland on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
