SEATTLE – Head Coach Jim Hayford announced updates to the Seattle U men's basketball coaching staff Tuesday, including the additions of D'Marques Tyson as Assistant Coach, Steven Shpreyregin as Director of Player Development and Al Grigsby as Assistant to the Head Coach, as well as the return of Patrick Mulligan as Director of Player Personnel.

"I am pleased to welcome these three fine men to our staff, as well as the return of Coach Mulligan," said Hayford, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the Redhawk program in 2021-22. "Our staff complements one another very well and provides us with a diverse set of strengths and experiences."

Tyson competed collegiately at University of Portland from 2014-18. A three-time team captain and member of the Pilots' Student Athlete Advisory Committee from 2015-18, Tyson departed Portland ranked first all-time in made three-pointers and as a 1,000-point scorer. After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing in 2018, Tyson went on to play professionally for Vitoria S.C. in Guimaraes, Portugal.

A native of Bothell, Wash., Tyson began his prep career at Lakewood High School, leading Lakewood to the 3A State Championship game in 2013. He transferred to Quality Education Academy (QEA) in North Carolina for his senior season and was named the MVP of the Greater Carolina High School Athletic Association.

"After playing professional basketball and an outstanding career at Portland, D'Marques joins us with a great understanding of the Seattle recruiting region while also possessing numerous international contacts," said Hayford.

Shpreyregin spent the past two seasons at Seattle U as a graduate assistant, following a stint as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Bellevue High School in 2018-19. He was a member of the Washington State men's basketball program from 2016-18. Shpreyregin's coaching path began at just 12 years old as a youth basketball coach in the Seattle area.

"Steve had two excellent seasons with us as a graduate assistant and has earned this promotion," Hayford said. "He is an up-and-coming star in the business."

Grigsby has spent the better part of the last two decades in sales and business development, but is no stranger to the hardwood. He played at Cal in the 1990s, helping the Bears advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 twice, then went on to play professional basketball in Japan from 1997-2002.

Previous coaching experience includes being on staff with the women's basketball team at Mission College from 2004-05 and the men's basketball staff at Gavilan College from 2006-07. He has also served as a coach and mentor with West Valley Basketball Club from 2002-20.

"Al is making this career change after a successful near 20-year in the business world," Hayford said. "He brings a great perspective on and off the court."

Mulligan rejoins the Seattle U staff this year after serving in a similar capacity from 2017-20. Accomplished high school basketball coach, Mulligan spent the majority of his coaching and teaching tenure at Wallenberg High School in San Francisco. He served as the boys varsity basketball coach from 1991-2017, the boys varsity golf coach from 1994-2017 and was a social studies and physical education teacher from 1993-17. Mulligan also served on the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Basketball Advisory Committee from 2002-2017, and ran the Bulldog Basketball Camps in the Bay Area for more than 20 years.

As a prep basketball coach, Mulligan coached his teams into the California state section playoffs nearly every year, while also making eight semifinal appearances, one championship game appearance and one NorCal appearance. He also led his golf teams to 22 section appearances, two section titles and two NorCal appearances. Mulligan was earned a CIF Model Coach Award in 2004 and a Double Goal Coach Award by the Positive Coaching Alliance in 2011.

Tyson, Shpreyregin, Grigsby and Milligan join Associate Head Coach Chris Victor, who is in his fifth year on staff, Associate Head Coach Alex Pribble, who is in third year, and Director of Operations Matt Jones, who is in his second year in the position.
