MESA, Ariz. — The Western Athletic Conference announced late Saturday night, that Seattle U baseball's Nestor German and Connor O'Brien were each named to the WAC All-Tournament Team, following standout performance's during the week's event. The awards were voted on the members of the media covering the tournament.
German hauled in the honor after a dazzling Friday performance that saw the freshman right-hander record a complete-game shutout victory, the first of his career, while tallying a career-best seven strikeouts with zero walks in a 10-0 victory over No. 4-seed NM State. The Seattle native led the tournament in innings pitched (9.0) heading into the championship game, while being one of just two pitchers to have a 0.00 ERA with seven or more innings.
O'Brien meanwhile put together a strong week at the plate, hitting 5-for-17 (.294), while slugging .588 and posting a .368 OBP. Prior to the championship game, the senior shortstop had a tournament-best seven RBI which included a two-run triple against NM State in the opening game on Wednesday, as well as a game-tying three-run home run against No. 6-seed Utah Valley the next morning. The Brier, Wash., native was also 2-for-2 on the stolen base attempts, scored two runs, and had was one of just four players with 10 or more bases heading into the title game.
With the announcement, the duo became the fourth and fifth different Redhawks to earn WAC All-Tournament Team honors; while also the second set of Redhawk teammates to be recognized in the same season, since Lucas Denney and Sean Sutton both garnered the award in 2016.
