SEATTLE – Seattle University softball rolled to a sweep of Dixie State on Friday afternoon, winning by scores of 3-1 and 8-0 in five innings in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) doubleheader. Cherise Silvan led with five hits on the day, while Shi Smith tossed a one-hit shutout in the nightcap at Logan Field.
Stefanie Madrigal held down the DSU offense early, striking out a pair in the first. In the bottom of the second, the Redhawks put together a two-out rally. Cherise Silvan singled to center and then Brooke Milder lofted a hit to right that allowed Silvan to take third base. With Alyson Matriotti at the plate, Milder took off for second, drawing a throw from the DSU catcher. Silvan dashed towards home and scored for a 1-0 lead, as Milder eluded the tag at second.
The visitors strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases in the third, but Madrigal earned a flyout to left to close the frame. Madrigal continued to contain the Trailblazer attack as the game rolled on.
In the bottom of the fifth, it was Silvan again sparking the Redhawks, this time with a double down the leftfield line. After a Brooke Milder sacrifice bunt, Matriotti hit a groundball to short that brought in Silvan for a 2-0 advantage. With two outs, Ally Choate doubled to left for her 200th career hit and an RBI.
Bailey Thompson followed with a HBP, marking her second of the day and 34th of her Redhawk career, setting the program record as she passed Sarah Petosa (2011-14) on the all-time list.
Madrigal worked around a single in the sixth for another scoreless inning. DSU homered to lead off the seventh, but Madrigal got a strikeout and then a liner to Madison Cathcart, who made the catch and beat the runner to the bag to end the contest.
Madrigal went all seven innings, giving up just one run on six hits. She struck out five Blazers in the ninth win of the year. Silvan led the offense with three hits and two runs.
Smith tossed a perfect first inning to bring SU to the plate. Choate singled on the infield with one out. Thompson hit a single and then a DSU error allowed Choate to come around for the game's first run. After a Cathcart walk, Carley Nance hit a deep flyball to right that ended up clearing the fence for a three-run homer.
After Smith retired six straight in the second and third, Cathcart started the bottom of the third with a base hit to right. Nance then hit a towering blast to rightfield for her second homer of the day and a 6-0 advantage.
Smith put down DSU in order again in the fourth. Olivia Viggiano hit a single to open the bottom of the frame. Choate then singled and Viggiano stole third. Thompson came through with an RBI single to left to make it 7-0.
In the fifth, Smith picked up the first two outs before finally surrendering a single to right. Silvan singled and stole a base to set up Brooke Milder, who lined a single to left to drive in Silvan and close the Friday sweep.
Smith was fantastic, nearly throwing five perfect frames, while striking out four Blazers. Choate, Thompson, Nance, and Silvan each posted two hits in the win.
The Redhawks host the Blazers for a single game tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Logan Field.
