MARICOPA, Ariz. - Seattle U women's golf wrapped up its second to last tournament of the season on Tuesday, finishing sixth out of 20 teams at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz. New Mexico State claimed the team title with a stroke total of 5-over, while CSU Fullerton's Brittany Shin won first place with a shot total of 5-under. The Redhawks posted a team score of 31-over, with their best team round of 293 coming in the second round on Monday. The two-day event took place at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. on the 6,131 yards course with a par of 72.
The best performer of the group was junior Samantha Bruce as she demonstrated great consistency, leading to a sixth place finish with a shot total of 216 (72-70-74). This is Bruce's third straight top-20 finish and highest placement on the season.
"Beyond excited for Samantha because I know she has really been working on her putting recently," said Head Coach Marc Channdonet.
Behind Bruce, was sophomore Azumi Arai (77-75-74) who improved each round, while fellow sophomore Megan Kelly (75-75-76) tied in overall shot total with Arai at 226 and senior Keisha Lugito posted a three round total of 231 (76-76-79). Rounding out the team score was senior Kimberlee Tottori (78-72) who withdrew from today's final round.
"The weather conditions along with some of the more difficult starting holes made it tough on us to get off to a good start," said Chandonnet. "However, they did a great job of battling all day in those 20 mph winds and we came away with another solid finish for our group. We still have a lot of work to do to prepare for the WAC Championships but I can see our continued improvement."
Four Redhawks also competed as individual in this event as senior Vendela From (74-73-79) was the best performer of the group. Behind From, was senior Krystal Hu (83-74-79) who put together a strong performance in round two, while fellow senior Nicole Foster (80-81-80) made her season debut in this tournament. Rounding out the participants from Seattle U was senior Anne Transier who finished with a three round total of 250 (82-83-85).
The Redhawks will wrap up their season with another trip to Arizona on Apr. 12-13 as they travel to Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., for their final tournament before the WAC Championships.
